Viagra

Enhances Sexual Stimulus

How Viagra Works

  • During normal sexual stimulation, the body releases nitric oxide (NO) in penile blood vessels; NO triggers production of cGMP, a molecule that causes smooth muscle in the penis to relax. This relaxation allows blood to flow into the spongy tissue (corpora cavernosa), producing an erection.

  • PDE-5 is an enzyme that breaks down cGMP — when PDE-5 acts, cGMP levels fall, causing the erection to subside.

  • Viagra (sildenafil) blocks PDE-5, preventing cGMP breakdown. As a result, cGMP stays elevated longer, enabling and sustaining the vasodilation needed for an erection — but only if there is sexual stimulation.

What Viagra Is Used For

  • Erectile Dysfunction (ED): The primary and most common use — helping men who have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection.

  • Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH): Under other brand names (e.g. for sildenafil formulations for PAH), it’s used to relax blood vessels in the lungs, lowering pulmonary blood pressure.
