What is MT-1 (Melanotan-1)?
MT-1, commonly called Melanotan-1, is a synthetic peptide designed to mimic the action of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a naturally occurring hormone involved in skin pigmentation.
Its primary role is to stimulate melanin production in the skin.
How MT-1 Works
MT-1 binds mainly to the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) found on melanocytes (pigment-producing skin cells). When this receptor is activated:
Melanocytes increase melanin synthesis
Skin darkens gradually, similar to a natural tan
Pigmentation occurs without direct UV exposure
This process is slower and more controlled compared to UV tanning.
Primary Effects and Characteristics
Pigmentation
Promotes eumelanin production (the darker, more UV-protective type of melanin)
Leads to a gradual, even tan
Often associated with fewer freckles compared to UV tanning
Photoprotective Properties
Increased melanin may offer some protection against UV radiation
Originally researched for photosensitivity disorders
Selectivity
MT-1 is more selective for MC1R than later melanotan variants
This selectivity contributes to fewer off-target effects compared to MT-2
