What is Cialis / Tadalafil
Cialis is the brand name for the drug Tadalafil.
It belongs to a class of medications called PDE5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors), which act on vascular smooth muscle.
Mechanism of Action — How It Works
Under sexual stimulation, the body naturally releases nitric oxide (NO) in penile tissue. NO triggers production of cGMP, a molecule that causes relaxation of smooth muscle in penile arteries and the erectile tissue (corpus cavernosum), allowing increased blood flow and thereby enabling erection.
Normally, an enzyme called PDE5 breaks down cGMP, which causes the erection to subside. Tadalafil blocks PDE5, preventing cGMP breakdown, thereby prolonging the relaxation of smooth muscle and improving the ability to maintain an erection — but only when there is sexual stimulation.
Because of its chemical properties and pharmacokinetics, Cialis generally lasts much longer than some other ED drugs.
